On Sony and Microsoft's recent acquisitions in the Fighting Game Community.
Two pillars of the FGC involved with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (and Melee) tournaments now purchased by Nintendo's most direct competitors.
NintendObs Daily. Thursday, March 25.
Just last Thursday, Sony acquired Evo through a joint venture partnership with newly-formed company RTS. Prior to that, Microsoft acquired smash.gg in December 2020 all on their own. When it comes to Evo, one could argue that Sony pretty much saved the premier event after its downfall surrounding Evo Online 2020. The same could be argued, but it's more of a long shot, about Microsoft and smash.gg since these COVID times have virtually canceled every single physical tournament. (Though how a company has "Smash" in their name, caters Super Smash Bros. tournaments extensively and did not get a lawsuit from Nintendo yet is quite the peculiar head-scratcher.)
