On Nintendo and PlayVS's alliance for North American high school eSports.
Splatoon 2 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as officially recognized high school varsity athletics just like basketball, football and track & field.
NintendObs Daily. Wednesday, June 9.
Starting with the 2021-2022 school year, its season kicking off on September 27, 2021 to be precise, kids in participating high schools in the U.S. and Canada will be able to compete in Splatoon 2 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as officially recognized high school varsity athletics just like basketball, football and track & field. This is all thanks to PlayVS's pioneering of eSports as sanctioned high school athletics and their exclusive partnerships with state and national high school athletic associations, now in agreement with Nintendo of America. On the business side of things, this alliance will allow Nintendo to provide hundreds of schools with a Nintendo Switch system, and 3,000 schools with either Splatoon 2 or Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, including a 12-month Individual Membership to Nintendo Switch Online. The final segment of the latest Nintendo Power Podcast discusses the matter with Bill Trinen, head of Nintendo Treehouse, and Delane Parnell, Founder and CEO of PlayVS.
