NintendObs Thinks: Neo The World Ends with You, absolutely insane.
Impressions on the demo that literally came out of nowhere.
I’m like wow. Since when does Square Enix actually makes good games that are not exclusive to this or that console manufacturer? Since when does Square Enix makes great games that aren’t commissioned for timed exclusivity by Sony or Nintendo or financed in any way, shape or form by Microsoft? In truth, since when does Square Enix actually bother to go all out on all fronts on a game that is designed be a multiplat? I cannot believe that so many years later, even with the Final Remix on Nintendo Switch in 2018 and the anime going on right now, Square Enix actually took The World Ends with You franchise very seriously.
As the game’s promotion progressed trailer by trailer, I was hyped but always very cautious. We’re talking about the company that just released Balan Wonderworld here. I had this saying that, when it comes to the character design, I was on board 100%. English voice acting? Same thing. Music. Saaaaaame. And now having played the demo, I am happy to report that at this time I support what used to be my biggest fear about this game, the combat system, one hundred and sixty-nine percent, in the immortal words of Nick Kroll on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
But that’s only a fragment of where the game really impresses. It is just so modern and unapologetic about it. Not only that, the localization is top-notch I’m literally dumbfounded. First of all, as soon as that dude from the Ruinbringers said something to the effect of “Do you even scan, bro???” I was like that’s it, here in the West the English dubbing is better than the Japanese original, period. What’s more, I’m playing the game in French, and using that as a reference for all of the other non-English translations, they went so far as to even remake the stickers that Rindo and his friends use in text messages, that’s how much they’re caring about this worldwide release come July 27, 2021.
