NintendObs Asks: Miranda Parkin on voicing Nagi Usui in Neo The World Ends with You.
"If you feel like you relate to Nagi in any way, I adore and support the everliving hell out of you." A NintendObs Dailies exclusive interview.
Luther from NintendObs Dailies:
I love Nagi. Period. There is no playable female character like her in Japanese role-playing videogames. There have been many geek girls in JRPGs before, sure. But do they wear a curve-cancelling t-shirt all the way to their knees? Do they make ninja signs to unleash their special powers? Do they adopt the kamehameha stance to charge their attacks? Do they "kitty-punch" on the battlefield? Do they pose like Naruto when triggering their ultimate move? Do they proudly play otome games? And do they bring a hazubando-covered backpack into combat? No they do not. None whatsoever can claim to do all of the above, except Nagi, proving that a woman can be jaw-breaking sexy by doing everything in the book one would claim to be the exact opposite. After this long, but I feel, necessary presentation, how do you relate to Nagi as a person, and how does she relate to your career as a voice actress?
Miranda Parkin:
Nagi is very much like me, except to the Nth degree. I’d say she’s closest to the little Superwholockian me attending middle school with a TARDIS backpack, a multitude of fangirl bows, knee high socks, et cetera. She’s such an exact version of all the fans I’ve met over the years at conventions (never been to a convention as talent, only as a fangirl). I’m not sure how she relates to my career, but seeing as she’s my first main character role in the 7ish years I’ve been doing voiceover, she’s always gonna be extremely important not just as an extremely well written character but as a character that’s close to my heart in more ways than one. Nagi gave me a really big break, the biggest of my career, and I’ll always be grateful for this little fangirl.
