New stories. New gameplay. Fire Emblem Warriors Three Hopes is here.
Every adapted gameplay element manages to make sense with the lore in this experience of a different pace.
NintendObs Daily. Friday, June 24.
Fire Emblem players we eatin'. With Fire Emblem Warriors Three Hopes, Fire Emblem Three Houses now enjoys its own Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity, from Nintendo Direct opener last February to Nintendo's second retail release this month. The concept this time is a retelling of the sixteenth story in the Fire Emblem universe, and a retooling of Fire Emblem Three Houses's mechanics in an action game in real-time. The narrative gets to the trigger in the span of the free demo rather than half a playthrough — since it's no longer a secret who started the war — and whether it's about classes, weapon crafting, character recruitments, combat arts or so much more, every adapted gameplay element manages to make sense with the lore in this experience of a different pace.
I had my doubts when I first played the demo, but now I'm quite frankly all about this title. Applied to its game design, an NPC in the base camp puts it best: "Everything has its use." Fire Emblem Warriors Three Hopes's various economies are crafted so that except for your characters' lives in classic mode, nothing is definitively lost whether you choose to play as a completionist or as someone who prioritizes going through the story. Speaking of which, though Fire Emblem Three Houses remains de facto the basis here, it really feels like Fire Emblem Warriors Three Hopes is its own canon story, one in some ways that is much more enjoyable than the original, filling its gaps and wielding a less dramatic tone for, so far at least, a less barbaric outcome. I mean, Edelgard is less of dictator, Dimitri is less of maniac, and Claude is less of a couldn't-care-less kind of guy. This de juro spin-off experience truly acts as a heartfelt farewell to the original tale of Fódlan, an encore for the fans, and one that can easily clock into the hundreds of hours too.
